Cuttlebone Eco-Grade – natural & resource-saving – a natural calcium source for invertebrates such as isopods , millipedes & co. for the terrarium.
Cuttlebone isn't about perfect aesthetics, but about its functionality within the setup. The cuttlebone serves as the classic "mineral spot": a solid piece that you simply place in the terrarium – and the animals will help themselves as needed. That's precisely why we offer Eco-Grade : cuttlebone that isn't "pretty trimmed" or harshly sorted out. You get a genuine natural product with patina, color variations, and minor visual irregularities – fully functional, with less unnecessary waste from over-sorting.
What is sepia?
Cuttlebone is the inner calcareous shell of the cuttlefish. In terrariums, it is used as a natural mineral source – primarily because of its high calcium content.
Why is cuttlebone important for invertebrates?
Many invertebrates use minerals like calcium as building blocks – for example, for their shells/exoskeletons and growth. Cuttlebone is provided in the terrarium as a "self-service" mineral source, allowing the animals to access it as needed.
Why Eco-Grade makes sense:
– Natural: untreated, unpolished, genuine natural product
– Resource-saving: less sorting = less waste
– Invertebrates don't care about appearance: what matters is that it is used.
Application:
Simply place it in the terrarium as a fixed mineral dish or offer it separately. If it gets dirty, briefly rinse/brush it and put it back in place. Replacement is usually only necessary when the dish is significantly worn or you want to replace it for hygiene reasons.
Eco-Grade Notice (important):
Color, structure, and surface vary naturally. Natural discolorations, patina, minor imperfections, or edges are normal and intentional – they do not indicate a functional defect .
Composition:
100% cuttlebone (natural product)
Analytical constituents:
Crude ash 92%
of which calcium 41%
Humidity 8%
Contents:
Net weight: 100 g
How do I offer the cuttlebone in the terrarium? +
Simply place it in the terrarium as a permanent mineral station – preferably in an easily accessible spot. The animals will ingest it as needed.
Do I need to replace the sepia if it gets dirty ?
No. You can simply rinse the cuttlebone with water and clean it with a soft brush if needed. Replacement is usually only necessary when it is significantly worn or you want to hygienically renew it.
What does "Eco-Grade" mean for cuttlefish bone? +
Eco-grade means: natural and not pre-sorted. Patina, color variations, and visual irregularities are normal – the function as a mineral source remains the same, only more resource-efficient due to less sorting.
