For meaningful readings: do not measure directly in the spray, not on wet substrate, and not directly above a "damp corner". Ideally, measure where your animals frequently spend time – and test different positions if necessary to compare microclimates within your setup.

Why do measurements differ depending on the position?

Temperature and humidity are rarely uniform throughout a terrarium. Top/bottom, proximity to ventilation, heat lamp, misting area, or humid zones all make a difference. That's precisely why this device is so useful: it lets you see how your setup is really performing.
