Armadillidium maculatum – Zebra woodlice
The zebra pill bug (Armadillidium maculatum) impresses with its striking black and white striped pattern and reaches a size of approximately 1.8 cm. Originally from the deciduous forests of southern France, it is extremely hardy and suitable for both beginners and long-time pill bug enthusiasts.
Climate & Facilities:
Create a humid-dry zone in your container: Keep the temperature constant between 22°C and 26°C and a relative humidity of 60% to 80%. A moist retreat area with moss helps your woodlice regulate their own comfort level.
Feeding & Care:
As omnivores, your woodlice enjoy nibbling on leaf litter, rotten wood, and fresh vegetables like zucchini or carrots. Supplement their diet with dried gammarus or fish food for an extra portion of protein. Calcium sources like crushed cuttlefish bones ensure a strong shell.
Reproduction & Growth:
Under ideal conditions, each female lays egg packets containing several dozen offspring up to four times a year. After about six weeks, the tiny young isopods develop rapidly and, after just a few molts, develop their characteristic "zebra plumage." They reach sexual maturity after about 6–8 months.
