Isopod Starter Set – your complete introduction to keeping isopods, no need to gather parts. You get an 11-liter box with four-way ventilation plus substrate, moisture components, minerals, and a food & water station. All you need are the isopods – then you can start right away.
Box Format, Stackability & Ventilation:
The box measures 37 × 26 × 14 cm (L × W × H), is stackable, and has four-way ventilation for particularly good air circulation. Even when stacked, the isopods reliably receive fresh air. The ventilation grilles are drosophila and fungus gnat-proof – ensuring the box is cleanly ventilated without typical "small insects" becoming a problem.
What the Set is Designed For:
For a clean, stable isopod box with sensible moisture distribution and clear feeding areas. Everything is put together so you don't have to "experiment": put in the substrate, create zones, moisten – add isopods.
What Each Component Provides:
– Forest Soil: Base substrate for the box – maintains structure, supports a stable microclimate, and is the foundation for your substrate. Plus point: There is enough Forest Soil in the set to be able to refresh the box later.
– Sphagnum Moss: for a reliable moisture zone ("moisture island"), allowing the animals to regulate themselves. Important: Moisten sphagnum according to the instructions on the packaging before use.
– Feeding Leaves / Leaf Mulch (Mix): Top layer, structure, and natural food supply – plus hiding places in the setup. Approx. 750 ml included.
– Cuttlebone Pieces: natural calcium source as a mineral station (minerals are an important basic for many invertebrates). Approx. 250 ml included.
– Isopod Dish XL: defined feeding spot – less food "spread throughout the substrate."
– Mini Insect Waterer: simple water station that you can easily refill.
Quick Guide: How to Set Up Your Starter Set +
1) Moisten sphagnum (according to the instructions on the packaging).
2) Add Forest Soil to the box.
3) Add some of the feeding leaves/leaf mulch and some of the moistened sphagnum and mix roughly.
4) Mix in cuttlebone pieces as desired (some can remain visible). Optionally, break them into smaller pieces.
5) On top: loosely distribute remaining sphagnum, remaining leaves, and some cuttlebone.
6) Leave clear spaces for Isopod Dish XL and Mini Insect Waterer.
7) Re-moisten everything appropriately (depending on isopod species/recommendation) – then introduce isopods.
Practical Tip (saves you extra bowls): Moisten the sphagnum directly in the isopod box (according to the packaging instructions). Then remove the part you want to place on top later as a moisture island. You can mix the rest directly into the box with Forest Soil and some leaves. This way you don't need an extra box/bowl for preparation.
Scope of Delivery:

– Sphagnum Moss
– Mix of Feeding Leaves / Leaf Mulch (approx. 750 ml)
– Cuttlebone Pieces (approx. 250 ml)
– 1× Isopod Dish XL
– 1× Mini Insect Waterer
Notes:
Natural products (substrate, moss, leaves, cuttlebone) may naturally vary in color, structure, and piece size.
The included 3D-printed parts (Mini Insect Waterer, Isopod Dish XL) are manufactured using the 3D printing process. We assure high quality, but small imperfections or irregularities may occur due to the printing process. These do not affect the functionality or stability of the parts and do not constitute a defect. Each part is unique and reflects the influences of material and process.
What else do I need to get started? +
Just your isopods. Everything for getting started (box, substrate, moisture components, minerals, food & water station) is included in the set.
Can I stack multiple boxes – will the isopods get enough air? +
Yes. The boxes are stackable, and thanks to the four-way ventilation, excellent air circulation is ensured even when stacked, so the isopods reliably receive fresh air.
What exactly does "drosophila and fungus gnat-proof" mean? +
You have air exchange, but the typical small insects (drosophila/fungus gnats) are reliably "stopped" by the ventilation grilles. This makes the box much more relaxed in everyday use.
What is cuttlebone for in the set? +
As a mineral station/calcium source. You can mix some in and offer some visibly – so the animals can help themselves if needed.
Suitable accessories – what else is worthwhile? +
Useful additions include, for example, cork pieces for additional structure & hiding places (more retreat, more surface area) as well as refill products like leaves/feeding leaves, sphagnum, or cuttlebone.
