Sepia Cuttlebone Eco-Grade – natural & resource-saving – a natural calcium source for invertebrates like isopods, millipedes & co. for the terrarium.
With sepia, it's not about perfect optics, but about its utility in terrarium setup. The sepia cuttlebone is the classic "mineral station" for this: a solid piece that you simply place in the terrarium – and the animals help themselves as needed. That's precisely why we offer Eco-Grade: sepia that isn't "prettily cut" or strictly sorted out. You receive a genuine natural product with patina, color nuances, and minor visual irregularities – full function, less unnecessary waste due to over-sorting.
What is sepia?
Sepia (cuttlebone) is the inner calcareous shell of the cuttlefish. In terraristics, it is used as a natural mineral source – primarily due to its high calcium content.
Why is sepia important for invertebrates?
Many invertebrates use minerals like calcium as a building block – e.g., for carapaces/exoskeletons and growth. Sepia is available in the terrarium as a "self-service" mineral source, allowing animals to help themselves as needed.
Why Eco-Grade makes sense:
– Natural: untreated, unpolished, genuine natural product
– Resource-saving: less sorting = less waste
– Invertebrates don't care about aesthetics: what matters is that it's used
Application:
Simply place it in the terrarium as a fixed mineral station or offer it separately. If soiled, rinse/brush briefly and reinsert. Replacement is usually only sensible when the cuttlebone is significantly worn/consumed, or if you wish to renew it for hygiene reasons.
Eco-Grade Note (important):
Color, texture, and surface naturally vary. Natural discolorations, patina, minor cosmetic imperfections, or edges are normal and intentional – not a quality defect in function.
Composition:
100% Cuttlebone (natural product)
Analytical constituents:
Crude ash 92 %
of which calcium 41 %
