Cubaris “White Side”: Care & Feeding Guide

The pale sides of Cubaris spec. “White Side” stand out against dark leaf litter. We recommend an accessible enclosure with loose substrate, plenty of cover and a stable moist area. Elaborate equipment is not necessary.

Appearance & behaviour
White Side has pale flanks and a darker back. The animals can hide securely beneath bark and leaves, making a small new group seem to disappear. Check conditions calmly and avoid digging through the whole box each day to find them.
Enclosure & setup
Several centimetres of loose substrate help retain moisture below the surface. Mix in decomposed leaves and white-rotted wood, then add a leaf covering and our Cork Fragments 200 g as retreats. Place suitable pieces loosely but securely without compacting the substrate beneath. A moss area makes targeted watering easier. We recommend ventilation that allows air exchange without drying the enclosure too quickly.
Temperature & moisture
Use 23–26 °C as a guide. Keep one side reliably moist and water the other more lightly. Check beneath leaves and bark, not just near the lid. Avoid direct sun, sharp temperature changes and wet, compacted soil. The animals should always have different areas to choose from.
Food & calcium
Keep leaves, suitable decaying wood and calcium available. Offer our Premium Sowbug Food in small portions at a fixed feeding spot. In moist enclosures especially, use the mixture sparingly and check it regularly instead of scattering large amounts beneath the cork. Young colonies often consume little extra food. Remove leftovers and increase portions only when they are consistently being eaten.
Breeding & colony growth
We recommend a quiet start and stable conditions. Small juveniles are easy to overlook in leaf litter. Frequent digging or unnecessary complete substrate changes disturb the group. As numbers grow, replenish leaves and shelters and gradually provide more space.
Comparing the range
White Side, Panda King and Pak Chong share many basic care needs, so each does not require a completely different enclosure design. We still recommend separate groups. Trade names do not settle their precise relationships, and separate boxes keep offspring identifiable.
Routine care
- Check regularly that the moist corner has not dried out and ventilation openings are clear.
- Remove leftover food and replenish leaves as they are consumed.
- Replace substrate in portions when needed, taking care of tiny juveniles.
Frequently asked questions
Does White Side need very wet substrate?
No. A moist corner is important, but the soil should not be muddy. Less damp areas and air exchange matter too.
Why do I rarely see my animals?
A small group can stay well hidden beneath leaves and bark. Check moisture and food without continually opening every shelter.
Can White Side share a box with Panda King?
For breeding, we recommend separate boxes. Similar care needs are not a reason to combine the groups.
