Cubaris sp. “Panda King” – Keeping, Breeding & Feeding

High-contrast, twilight favorites: "Panda King" is robust, prolific, and ideal for humid to tropical setups. This guide takes you straight through everything from setup and climate to feeding, breeding, and care.

Key parameters at a glance

  • 🌡️ Temperature: 23–28 °C; a slightly warmer range (26–27 °C) promotes breeding.
  • 💧 Humidity: Humid zone permanently 70–90% RH; rest of the area moderately humid.
  • 🪵 Substrate: ≥5 cm forest soil with white-rotten hardwood & plenty of leaves; cuttlebone as a source of lime (starting mix ~2 : 1 : 1).
  • 🌀 Ventilation: Moderate but steady airflow – no stuffy, humid air.
  • 🥬 Food: Leaves/dead wood permanently; 1–2 times a week vegetables/leaves & protein (Gammarus, insects, fish flakes); lime regularly.
  • 🐣 Breeding: Gestation period ~3 weeks; 15–25 young; breeding maturity ~3–4 months at ~25 °C.

Origin & Behavior

Cubaris sp. "Panda King" originates from humid, calcareous regions of Southeast Asia (Vietnam/Thailand). The exact species has not been scientifically described (hence the "sp."). The animals are crepuscular and nocturnal, usually found under cork, leaves, or in cracks in the ground during the day. However, individual animals are often seen moving among the foliage in stable groups.

Terrarium & furnishings

Size & Ventilation

For a starting group of 25–35 animals , boxes of 5–10 liters or glass terrariums of 20×20×20 cm or larger are sufficient. Large gauze surfaces are not necessary; what is more important is a gentle, constant airflow to prevent humid, stagnant air.

Substrate & soil layers

A good base is a layer of at least 5 cm of loose forest soil with plenty of white-rot hardwood (crumbled) and dry leaves . A practical starting mix is forest soil : wood : leaves ≈ 2 : 1 : 1. Mix in crushed cuttlebone and add additional pieces.

Humidity management

A humid zone with 70–90% RH is maintained permanently; the remaining area is only moderately humidified. The humidity gradient allows the colony to select appropriate micro-areas depending on the molting or activity phase.

Practical tip: Avoid persistent wetness across the entire building. Condensation on windows indicates insufficient airflow – adjust ventilation accordingly.

Feeding

Continuous food: Rotted leaves and dead wood should always be available. Supplement small portions of vegetables/leaves (e.g., zucchini, carrot, pumpkin, blackberry/beech leaves) once or twice a week .

Protein: 1–2 times weekly in small, clean portions (Gammarus, dried insects, fish flakes). Without animal protein, litter size and vitality decrease.

Lime: Add cuttlefish bones, mineral mix or finely ground eggshells regularly.

Hygiene: Remove protein residues promptly; feed moderately – this reduces mites and mold.

Breeding & Development

The gestation period is usually about three weeks . 15–25 young are common per litter. Young often display the typical black and white pattern after just a few days. At approximately 25°C, young are ready for breeding after 3–4 months , and adult size is usually reached after 5–6 months . The lifespan is approximately 1.5 years ; females produce multiple litters during this time.

Care & Hygiene

  • Partial substrate change every 3–4 months (never all at once) to maintain the microfauna.
  • Detect overstocking and thin the colony or enlarge the tank if necessary.
  • Mite prevention through moderate feeding, removal of protein residues and adequate ventilation.
  • Remove mold in specific areas; check moisture management and airflow.

Posture report – step by step

  1. Choose a tank: Faunabox 5–10 liters; lid and sides ventilated.
  2. Prepare substrate: at least 5 cm; starter mix 2:1:1 (forest soil: wood: leaves); mix in cuttlefish.
  3. Structure & hiding places: Cork bark, pieces of bark, piles of leaves; some moss.
  4. Create a humid zone: permanently moisten one corner; mist the remaining area only moderately.
  5. Establish a starting colony: 25–35 animals; 24 hours of rest.
  6. Start feeding: Leaves/dead wood permanently; 2x/week small portions of green fodder + protein.
  7. Check after 14 days: Substrate loose, no standing water; if necessary, slightly increase ventilation.
