Armadillidium gestroi: Care, Feeding & Breeding

Pale to yellowish spots against a dark body make Armadillidium gestroi especially distinctive. These pill isopods do not need elaborate equipment. We focus on generous leaf litter, sheltered places and a dependable moist retreat.

Appearance & behaviour
Gestroi can roll into a ball when disturbed. Leaves and bark provide both cover and food. A small starter group may therefore be difficult to spot. Patient observation at a feeding point is better than repeatedly rearranging the enclosure.
Enclosure & setup
Use loose, humus-rich substrate with decomposed leaves and white-rotted wood. Add a generous leaf covering and our Cork Fragments 200 g. Position suitable pieces near the edge of the moist area as well, so the animals have cover there. Keep the moist corner easy to reach. Heavy decorations are unnecessary; if you use stones, make sure they cannot move or topple.
Temperature & moisture
Use 21–24 °C as a guide. Sheltered areas beneath leaves or moss must not dry out. Keep other parts less damp. Add small amounts of water to the intended area. The substrate should hold moisture without becoming muddy, while ventilation allows air to circulate.
Food & calcium
Leaves are part of the daily food supply, not just decoration. Keep decaying wood and calcium available too. Our Premium Sowbug Food provides food at a fixed feeding spot. Start with a small amount using the included wooden spoon; occasional small vegetable portions can add variety. Reduce them if food remains uneaten: a starter group does not need the same quantity as a full breeding box.
Breeding & colony growth
Patience is useful when establishing a colony. Groups do not all develop at the same speed. Maintain steady moisture and temperature and avoid frequent major changes. Juveniles are easy to miss among soil particles. More heat or extra food is not automatically the answer when you have not seen offspring yet.
Comparing the range
Gestroi is recognisable by its pale spots. Zebra isopods have stripes, while Montenegro has a more colourful pattern. We place particular importance on moist shelters for gestroi; Montenegro can have a drier surface over more of its enclosure. Both need a moist retreat.
Routine care
- Check regularly that the moist corner has not dried out and ventilation openings are clear.
- Remove leftover food and replenish leaves as they are consumed.
- Replace substrate in portions when needed, taking care of tiny juveniles.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my colony growing slowly?
Settling-in time, age and group composition all matter. Check moisture, temperature and basic food before changing several things at once.
Should the whole box stay damp?
No. A dependable moist retreat is the priority. Less damp areas alongside it give the animals a choice.
My gestroi barely touch vegetables. Is that a problem?
Not necessarily. With plenty of leaves and decaying wood available, they may need little extra food. Offer small portions and remove leftovers.
